Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos..... Fill
up your lungs with good clean air!!!
Before you know it, December will be here, and you know what that
means? Yes, once again it's time for the annual Pack 983 Rain Gutter
Regatta!!!
When Do We Race?
12/15/2007 @ 9am - 1pm
Who Can Race?
We divide the Cub Scouts by rank: Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos.
Who Builds The Boat?
The Scout and adult should make the boat together as a project!
What Are The Rules?
The rules are listed here. Read them. FOLLOW THEM! THEY WILL BE
ENFORCED!
Theme Rules
Research an ancestor from another country and decorate your boat
as
appropriate for that country. If you cannot find an ancestor, then
pick a famous person from that country.
Be prepared to tell the judges who the person/ancestor is and what
your country is. Remember this is for fun and for a badge. Don't
take it too seriously and be prepared to have a good time.
Construction rules
1. The boat must be newly built for the current Cub Scouting
year. As much as practical, the boat should be substantially built
by
the Scout with parental supervision. The boat should use every part
from the BSA Raingutter Regatta Kit. Additional parts, decals, paint,
and glue are permitted.
2. Overall width shall not exceed 2 1/4 inches.
3. Overall length from bow to stern (including rudder) shall
not exceed 7.00 inches, nor shorter than 6.50 inches.
4. The mast must be upright and can be no taller than 6.50
inches from the deck surface.
5. The sail may be trimmed and shaped, but may not be larger
than the material supplied.
6. The keel and rudder may be glued anywhere on the boat, but
cannot cause the boat to exceed 7.00 inches in overall length.
7. Details such as figures, decals and paint are permissible
as long as these details are securely glued or fastened to the boat.
The scouts are encouraged to decorate their boat, as they will also
be
judged for design, and awards given to the top boats in each rank.
8. You can add material and items to the boats, but keep in
mind that lighter boats will generally be faster.
Race Rules:
1. Two boys will race against each other at a time. They
will be called based on the number assigned at registration.
2. Each boat must start with the back of the boat touching
the end of the rain gutter.
3. When the starter says go, the boys will propel the boats
by blowing on the sail only.
4. The boys' hands must be behind their backs at all times.
5. If a boat gets stuck, a race official can correct the
problem. If the problem is considered the fault of the track, the
race can be restarted.
THE BOY MAY NOT ADVANCE THE BOAT WITH HIS HAND AT ANY
TIME.
The race manager and race stager on each lane will judge violations.

To prevent excessive adult/parent influence on rule interpretation,
there is a second "OPEN-CLASS" for all the Akela's. This
is your time
to shine!!!
Construction Rules
1. The boat must fit in the Gutter and be supported by the water.
Wheels rolling on the gutter sides do not count. It must be a boat.
2. You boat must not touch both ends of the gutter at the same time.
The gutters are about 10' long, so a 10' boat is illegal, a 9'11"
boat
is ok.
3. Your final time will be multiplied by the length of the boat.
So
the 9'11" boat will have the 1 second time multiplied by 119.
Not a
winning combination.
Race Rules
1. Reach the other end first.
2. No pyrotechnics
3. Do not hurt anyone
4. Do not damage the gutters
5. Judges decision final
No prizes will be awarded but you will win bragging rights.
